I was told this could remain in the freezer for up to a year, but the are no preservatives listed that lead me to believe it is really expected to remain in the freezer for a year. This recipe book is a strange & unique collection of recipes from the Great Depression (which my grandmother used to make), newer desserts, and sweets of all types. But the author shows you how to make it all without sugar.

It was written in the early 90's, and the author (almost prophetically) points out that nutrasweet and the other old sweeteners don't taste great, but also pose potential health problems.

She has some rather complex ways of sweetening desserts, just like my grandmother used to do when they couldn't afford sugar (i.e., boiling raisins in milk, blending up apples and prunes to your dish, etc).

She has got some really good sugar substitute ideas. Feel free to follow these recipes to the "T" if you're yearning for the tastes and smells of nostalgia. *HOWEVER*...many of these recipes work just as well with a cup of Splenda, or a few drops of Stevia.

Make them the old fashioned way, or do short cuts with new sweeteners (like we do). As an added bonus, the Splenda or Stevia are zero carb and zero GI, so even lower carb than many of the authors solutions. Either way, these deserts fit a variety of lifestyles, whether you're body can't handle too much sugar (diabetics, etc), whether you're cutting sugar for health reasons, or if you are just looking to lose or maintain a healthy weight.

Before reading this novel, I was very intrigued to why Mr. Poe titled the novel Strawberries and Blackberry Cheesecake but by the time I got to the last period I very much understood. I would not have picked another title!

Mr. Poe did a very good job at connecting his readers to the characters in the novel. The book is written in manuscript style, which is not my preference but I believe it is still a decent read. Love, passion, tragedy and triumphs are all combined in Mr. Poe heartfelt novel STRAWBERRIES AND BLACKBERRY CHEESECAKE.

Let me tell you, I must disagree with some of the other reviewers. The image reproductions are excellent as are the paper and binding quality. This is the case with all the Taschen publications that I own. Before making statements about image reproduction quality, one must first understand the nature of the source material. Also, there is a very definite order to the layout of the photos, it just may not be that apparent in some instances. For example, we have women on the phone; women smoking cigarettes; women in the kitchen; women at the beach; women with whips; women in groups of three; bound women; black women; asian women and so on.

I agree with the others who were critical of this awful book. I too hoped it would be a good cozy, with thoughtful characters and a decent mystery. I ended up skimming to the end, just to see which horrible person was the killer (and you could take your pick, I didn't like any of the characters). At the ending I rolled my eyes and then threw the book in the trash. I love books, and have never, ever thrown one away. I wouldn't even pass this so-called mystery on to anyone else to read. There are so many great authors, don't waste your time on this one. In addition to the other authors mentioned to read instead-- please read Dana Stabenow, J S Borthwick, Jan Burke, Nevada Barr, Jerrilyn Farmer, Paula Gosling, Sarah Graves, Charlaine Harris, Carolyn Haines, Joan Hess, Jill Churchill (and I think Churchill was mentioned-- it bears repeating). Mr. Waters does an excellent job of connecting the reader to universal themes worth revisiting again and again. Mother Wonderful's Cheesecakes and Other Goodies: With 20 Absolutely New No-Bake Cheesecakes

I recently wanted to make a Vanilla wafer cheesecake crust, didn't know exactly how many wafers would make two cups and remembered that Ms. Chanin had discussed Vanilla wafers in MOTHER WONDERFUL'S CHEESECAKES AND OTHER GOODIES. Sure enough there was the answer I was looking for: for one cup, "coarsely chopped, 20 wafers; finely chopped, 25 wafers." So I revisited this cookbook that I had not looked at in years. I believe I have every cookbook, including this writer's other one as well, on the subject of cheesecakes published since I purchased my first one, THE JOY OF CHEESECAKE. I reread most of this one and now remember why I never use it for it is by far the most unusual--as in strange-- of any I own. Chanin says here that her husband says she is bossier than God. I would add that she is more opinionated than a fundamentalist preacher and apparently more unmoveable in her certainty that she is right.

One of her many commandments is that "Thou Shalt Never Defile Thy Crusts with Graham Cracker Crumbs." She finds OPCs (other people's cheesecakes) often blighted by soggy graham cracker crumb crusts and what she calls "banal lemon-flavored batter." I bake a lemon cheesecake that I would not be embarrassed to serve to Julia Child, were she alive, and I have baked literally dozens of cheesecakes with graham cracker crusts that were not soggy. Other directions with which I disagree: Ms. Chanin instructs the baker always to use lightly salted butter for the crust. (Unsalted butter gives the crust a much better flavor and who needs more salt, anyway?) She also recommends that the ingredients do not have to be at room temperature. (Anyone who has ever tried to whip a slab of cold cream cheese knows how senseless that rule is.) Ms. Chanin, with the exception of a Passover cheesecake or two, always includes a topping, usually sour cream, but flavoring it with vanilla is a no-no. (One can not have too much vanilla in anything is my motto.) Additionally, I do not believe that Ms. Chanin gives instructions anywhere as to where to place the oven rack although she always give precise times as to when the cake will be done. (I have rarely baked a cheesecake, even using the same recipe, that was done at the same time every time.) Another commandment is that we are not to let a cheesecake cool at room temperature although she gives no reason, scientific or otherwise, as to why she feels this way. (I let mine cool a couple of hours before putting them into the refrigerator and they turn out just fine.)

Ms. Chanin does have some great ideas, however. For instance, she suggests that you cover your cheesecake in the frigerator with a cardboad round that will absorb the moisture from the cake. I cover mine with a piece of thick grocery bag cut to the right size. She also recommends covering a piece of cardboard the size of the springform pan bottom with aluminum foil and using that instead of the metal bottom when you are baking so that you can serve the cake on the cardboard if you are serving the cake away from home.

Mother Wonderful includes a lot of recipes here for baked cheesecakes-- of course there is nary a simple vanilla or lemon-flavored one to be found-- no-bake cheesecakes, lower calorie cheesecakes (why bother with a no-bake cheesecake and just eat a smaller piece of an industrial strength one) along with other cakes as well.

I tried the first one if the book, Basic Lime-Almond Cheesecake, several years ago, and I recall that it was quite tasty. I also want to try her White Chocolate Cassis Cheesecake as well.

Becky Freeman is a REAL mom with lots of stories to share that every woman can relate to and laugh with. She has a wonderful sense of humor about herself and her hilarious situations. Yet, she is inspiring in many ways. Olivia's best work was already published several years earlier. At first you can't help but chuckle, especially if you were around during the 80's. Alot of the work in here is very time based and looks like posters hair metal bands would drool over. Regardless of the decade inspiration, the sheer talent Olivia has will keep you studying a piece long after your nostalgia for the days of air guitar and Iron Maiden ware off you can't help but see nothing but beauty on page after page. To be fair, I have only tried making one of the recipes in this cookbook, so my comments are mostly based on that. Twice I made the Herb Cheese Spread, using different yogurt cheeses in case that was the problem, and both times it was inedible. The only thing that could be tasted was the very sour cheese; even adding a bit more of the herbs didn't help. I was also disappointed to find that the cheesecakes in the book are all crustless, which, to me, keeps them from being actual cheesecakes. This is another entertaining selection from Fluke..the mystery is somewhat slow paced but not bad. My complaint is with the Norman/Mike situation. In every book, I find myself thinking "surely, this Norman/Mike romance will be resolved!" Only to find out by the end of the book it's the same old, same old! This storyline is totally unbelievable! No two guys are going to continue to date the same gal year after year and still remain good friends? Not likely and besides, it has become totally boring and predictable! Our local library has this book. I checked it out from there and kept it in the back of my mind for a long time. I have made the ammeretto cheese cake out of it while I had the book checked out of the library. The cheescake was so good. I decided I needed to own this book. I got this book b/c dd absolutely loves cheesecake. Looks like this book has every kind of cheesecake in here you can imagine, including the basic New York Cheesecake. I decided to try something different to start with, and tried the Carrot Cake Cheesecake. I even went out and bought myself a set of springform pans. The recipe called for a 9" springform pan which I couldn't find, so I used the bigger size that's an almost 10" pan. Glad I did cuz the recipe filled the WHOLE pan! It's delicious & had a perfect blend of crushed pineapple, shredded coconut, and chopped pecans in the carrot cake part. I don't even like pineapple & coconut (!), but I couldn't taste them in here and the texture is wonderful!! The recipe makes you think it's going to be different layers but I think I made a mess of it as I muddled through. Maybe it doesn't look fancy, but it is delish!! Looking forward to trying other recipes. A 10" cheesecake is quite large and will go a long way; something good for company.Buy The Cheesecake Bible: Includes 200 Recipes!

There are some decent recipes in this book, but none of them are "knock your sock off" wonderful. The suggestions for crusts and garnishes are very good. However, I was very disappointed with the lack of savory recipes. In addition, nearly all the recipes in the "no bake" section call for uncooked egg whites. This is not a good idea.

I do a bit of catering, and needed some interesting cheesecake recipes for a luncheon. Ordering this little book, was the best idea! There are no photos, but it really was not an issue for me. The text was interesting, and I also learned some tips on how to slice and serve the cheesecake. Four cheesecakes later, folks are talking about the luncheon, mainly the cheesecakes!
